Social Role Valorization (SRV) is based on the work of Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger and the principles of Normalization. The work by Wolfensberger is vitally important to the developmental sector in Ontario.
The basic tenant of the SRV “theory” is that if we value people with developmental disabilities…as human beings… that they will be more likely to meet their potential and have a better or higher quality of life. Along with reflection on your own beliefs and attitudes; person centred planning and utilizing supportive circles of care could be course outcomes in this part of the curriculum.
SRV would purport that students or participants in training would achieve “active listening”, allow for freedom and choice, respect choices that are within applicable norms and develop support plans that advocate on behalf of the client to realize these choices.
